How Old Do I Have to Be to Join?

You must be at least 5 years old or in Kindergarten by January 1st of each program year and no older than 19 by December 31st.

Can My Parent/Guardian Be Involved? Can I be a Volunteer for 4-H?

Of course! The San Mateo/San Francisco County 4-H Program needs adult volunteers to share skills with the youth in the program. University of California policy requires that volunteer leaders apply to work with 4-H youth, complete a live scan fingerprinting background check and attend an orientation from the club you would like to volunteer in and watch the orientation video before they can work with youth. If adults are interested in volunteering, contact a local club leader or Mary Meyer at the county UCCE 4-H YDP office to learn more.

4-H Youth Development is a national program over 100 years old. As set up by the U.S. Congress, the land grant university in each state houses the State 4-H Office and each land grant university provides research based curriculum to teach to 4-Hers in every county in the U.S. and in numerous foreign countries. In California, any University of California is a land grant university and the main 4-H campus is UC Davis. 4-H is a part of Cooperative Extension of which was established in the Smith-Lever Act of 1914. There are more than 20,000 adult volunteers making a difference in the lives of 130,000 thousand youth in the California 4-H Youth Development program (ca4h.org). San Mateo County has over 250 adult volunteers guiding the development of citizenship, leadership, and life skills of over 600 youth year-round. Short-term special interest programming reaches another 2,000 youth each year. 10 Community-based clubs span the county, from Daly City to La Honda to Pacifica to Pescadero. Age range of youth participants is 5 to 19 years of age. The 4-H Youth Development Program is a dynamic organization pairing teen and adult mentors with a younger generation to engage in hands-on, life skill based learning while emphasizing the value of concepts such as leadership, community involvement, being a good citizen, and having a positive self image.
